Good morning my lovelies - how the devil are you? Before I get into the hard-cold cash chat, I have a super exciting announcement… Drop 01, a beautiful collection of hand-picked Romanian bowls (and mugs), will be launching on my new website Nomadis Home next Saturday, 3rd May at 8am. If you’ve had your eye on some bowls, this will be your moment!

Paid subscribers will have 24 hours early access to the drop, with general access on Sunday 4th May for everyone else - so to get first dibs on the most beautiful bowls, be sure to be a paid subscriber.

I’ll be sending out more info later in the week, but for now, you can follow along on the Nomadis Home Instagram.

Money and Me

I earnt my first 7 quid when I was 9 years old, busking with my mate Annie in Brighton’s Preston Park. From recollection, I was on the flute and Annie was on the recorder; it was more about conquering our self-confidence than it was about earning a princely £3.50 each, but the hard cold cash felt good.

Then at 15.5yo I got a job in the big Habitat shop in Brighton’s Churchill Square, god that place was cool. The only issue being I couldn’t turn up for my first day’s work, as I didn’t have my National Insurance number yet - so instead, had to settle for a weekend job at SF Cody’s Emporium just a few months later, which wasn’t so cool! (Yes, I was obsessed with interiors as a teen as well!).

I guess, my point being, I’ve always loved getting out there and making money. Money = independence. So while I won’t bore you with a 24 year resume, I think it can be interesting to know how people like me, with many hats/jobs/strings to their bows, make ends meet. Cos let’s face it, we’re all too polite to ask.

Employed - Freelance

In 2018 I finally bit the bullet and went freelance, after 3 years of being part-time since Casper arrived. My time and energy were being pulled in so many directions - a toddler who I knew would be at school before I blinked; Bruno’s football commitments; Hugo’s many school meetings/suspensions etc pre-diagnosis; looking after a house which often contained 7 people; 3.5 days a week as an employee and my growing instagram - where I’d been taking on paid work for over a year.

And the stark reality was, having never had a base salary of more that £20k, I could earn more in a couple of days of Instagram work, than I could for the whole month at my part-time ‘day job’. The flexibility was calling and I ran to it with open arms and slight intrepidation.

Making Money on Instagram

Since 2018 - when I relied on a mixture of Instagram work and managing the socials of my previous employer on a self-employed basis, a split of approx 70:30 respectively - things have changed a lot.
